Macrium Reflect brief review and FAQ

Macrium Reflect is a powerful full-featured software for backups. It provides many opportunities for backups of files/partitions and disk images. This is a very flexible product. There are different plans: Free, Personal, Standalone, Site Backup and Technician.

It enables making backups on the fly (without restarting the computer) using Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service. Also, a user can easily mount an image as a virtual drive and just copy files from the image as from a regular folder.

Macrium Reflect is a complete backup solution and it offers rich functionality:

  1. protect files and OS via disk imaging technology
  2. Macrium Image Guardian (protection against ransomware)
  3. create disk images in Windows Explorer for easy recovery
  4. backup files and folders to a single compressed archive file
  5. backup entire PC or workstation to a single compressed image file
  6. full file/folder level backup and recovery
  7. email notifications
  8. disk cloning
  9. backup scheduler

The program has lots of settings, so a new user may be a little confused at first, though it does not take much time to learn the ins and outs.

Best effective and low cost imaging backup software by far

We use this for our server backups. Great piece of software! Was one of the lesser costing Imaging backup solutions I found out there in the market. Even great on creating backup scripts that you can run. Never lose any sleep since using at the company I work for. Before I came along, the company wasn't doing any type of Disaster Recovery. Now my company knows it's critical, especially when you need a file from the other day they've mistakenly deleted. Highly recommend it to any IT person out there. Also a great tool for bare metal imaging, in case a hard drive crashes after you've had a good image of it. Usually 15-30mins and your back online. ;-)

A good software but needs a lot of improvement

I have tested a lot of imaging, and even though I would pick this over Acronis Trueimage, it still feels quite lacking in many areas. When I needed it to create a file, I keep getting error codes indicating it couldn't back up to my external hard drive because it's a part of the computer and not an external hard drive. That's ridiculous to me because I later tried a USB flash drive which happened to work fine. It even worked better when I was ready to deploy it. I was also looking for a deployed feature which I enquired from the support team, but they weren't much of a help. I gave up. I never expected it from this software. Of all the other software i tried, this seems to be challenging to use, plus the support are pretty much useless.

    A must-have for IT experts

The Macrium reflect worked well when combined with the HYper V+ for creating machines imaging backups. It doesn't give any stress at all, not even activation issues. It can also do a restore over the network, both physically or through the virtual machine. It's a great product, and best of all, it's free. Free is good at the moment.

Macrium Reflect is the nest of the best

Over the last 60 years of being a programmer, I have utilized tons of backup programs. Some worked okay, some not nearly as good as Macrium Reflect. During the last five years, I've had two that failed when trying to restore a messed up system which caused me to start from the beginning. That hasn't happened since I began to use Reflect. It is straightforward to use, far more reliable than others, and the best part is that it comes packed with amazing features.
    • Pros
      • Ease of use, range of features and reliability
    • Cons
      • Can read USB disc sometimes

    It's a great freebie software

Macrium Reflect works perfectly well with the Windows 7 operating system, but most people use the Windows 10. For it to be useful for high windows OS, one has to pre-load the windows installation with a disk after formatting the drive from GPT to MBR. I found out this issue when I was trying to find out why it wouldn't load my dad's Windows 10 laptop to his recent one. It took me a couple four hours to rectify. And I think it will be beneficial for you to think about this when doing a clone image of a Windows pc 8 or 10.
    • Pros
      • Free and easy to use
    • Cons
      • Complicated to use on Windows 8 and higher
