Acronis True Image review (Jan 2020 update)

Cover image

True Image 2020 is a multifunctional software (backups, anti-malware, disk imaging) by Acronis, a global tech/data company founded in 2003. You’ve seen this product in our backup software blog article, and now we are going to present a full Acronis True Image review.

Acronis True Image is one of the best products in its niche, designed to perform data backup,  recovery, OS migration, archiving. It also allows to create bootable media (USB stick, CD/DVD) for emergency cases, e.g. when the system does not boot. It supports HDD, SSD, FTP servers, CD/DVD/BD disks, USB, eSATA, FireWire, SCSI, and PC card storage devices.

Here’s a brief video introduction from the vendor:

True Image is available for Windows OS, Apple MacOS, iOS and Android. Minimum system requirements are as follows:

Minimum system requirements for Acronis
Processor1 GHz
RAM1 GB
Disk space3.5 GB
USB drive space600 MB
Screen resolution1024 x 768
User roleAdministrator

For this review we used a trial version (some functionality blocked) on a Windows PC with 8 GB RAM and two logical disks. The interface is plain (bright colors, 17 languages) is divided into two areas: left sidebar menu and central action area. The menu consists of multiple features and settings, so let’s begin Acronis True Image review with features overview.

The first and most significant feature of Acronis is Backup menu for actual file backups and recovery. The window consists of two parts: list of backups and action area, the latter being a section to specify what, where to and what settings. As sources for backups the possibilities are:

  1. Entire PC - to backup all drives, a full copy of computer/laptop.
  2. Disk and partitions - to specify drives for backup.
  3. Files and folders - to specify exact files and folders.
  4. Files to notarize - similar to the previous one, only one can protect files from unauthorized modification (premium feature).
  5. Mobile devices - to backup files from a smartphone, tablet, etc.

Acronis True Image review

Backup storage options include Acronis cloud, external drive, local drive, FTP server, SMB/NFS share, NAS/NDAS, network share. Backups can be password protected (encrypted), though note that a password can not be restored in case of loss.

There is an interesting option called Delayed archiving: click Additional options from the Back up now button dropdown, select to perform a backup in 1, 2, 4, 6 hours or later.

Each backup can be set up via the following options: schedule, notifications, exclusions (file, folder, file extension), and a few extra settings. Scheduler allows to do daily, weekly, monthly backups, as well as nonstop (starts in 5 minutes after modifying the data), do not schedule, upon event (user logon/logoff, connection of external device, shutdown/restart).

Acronis True Image review

Backup lists can be sorted by various parameters such as name, date, update date, size, source type, destination type, newest/oldest. Activity tab is sort of a timeline. Recovery tab serves to restore files/folders or an entire backup copy. It conveniently displays a history previous backups so a user can select the one to recover.

Images of disks/partitions can be converted to VHD file format (virtual hard disk). If a disk image contains Windows 7/8/10 system partition, a PC can boot from it, however any changes will only be saved on that image. To convert TIB file to VHD, go to Backup section, click arrow-down icon on the disk image, select Convert to VHD option, and follow the instructions.

Unlike backup, archiving moves files to another destination, thus after it more free disk space appears. This is useful when you have important but rarely used files: pictures, documents, etc. You can get the files back any time. There are two ways to archive files in True Image: specify path to a folder or mark (tick the boxes) the files to archive.

Acronis True Image 2020 review

Archives menu does not display every archive separately - to view those a user has to click on the View in File Explorer link to open Windows Explorer.

Strangely enough, we encountered a serious issue when performing a simple archiving task. After we’ve archived several files, 10 Mb in size total, and clicked “View in File Explorer”, both CPU and RAM utilization went through the roof. Then, we’ve also launched Chrome and Skype to see what happens, and ...our laptop froze, probably due to virtually no free RAM. And that was a small-size archive without encryption.

Acronis True Image 2020 review

Sync menu allows file synchronization between PC and Acronis Cloud or another PC. This way, one can store the same files on multiple devices. Working on computer at home, later take a laptop to a cafe and continue to work there is one of life situations we all face. Files sync happens in real-time, i.e. instantly upon any change.

True Image review

Surely there are certain limitations. We cannot sync disks and partitions, system files and folders, hidden folders, temporary files, system registry, databases, email accounts, Windows libraries. Also note, that True Image must be installed on each PC to use the Sync feature.

Using Acronis Cloud to sync with could be helpful when one wishes to recover the older version of file/document, as cloud storage saves each version of uploaded files.

True Image review

To open a file on another device, you have to launch True Image there, log into account, navigate to Sync tab, click Join Sync and choose a folder to store data. In this scenario, a user can restore older versions too, although this feature is not present in Standard license.

NB: Those are not all features, of course, we’ve just touched on a few crucial ones. There are also full image backup, survival kit, Office 365 backup, notification center, cleanup utility, encryption, anti-ransomware, etc. Some of those tools we’ll mention now, so let’s proceed with our Acronis True Image review.

Tools sidebar tab contains various complementary features, some of which are quite interesting. Let’s go through them briefly:

  1. Clone Disk - to create a full copy of OS onto HDD/SSD (check How to clone drive). It is not available in the trial version.
  2. Rescue Media Builder - to create bootable USB/CD/DVD for recovery, if the system does not boot.
  3. Acronis Universal Restore - to restore backups to dissimilar hardware. Parallels Access - to remotely control PC from mobile devices. It requires a Parallels account (not Acronis account).Try&Decide - to freeze the system or disk and make changes without ill effect.
  4. System Clean-up - to remove passwords, history, temporary files, etc. We recommend to read more on the topic at PC optimization software
  5. Acronis Secure Zone - to create a secure partition (only FAT32 file system) for storing backups and protect it by password.
  6. Acronis DriveCleaner - to wipe hard drives of private data, which could be handy when selling a laptop, for instance.
  7. Acronis Startup Recovery Manager - to launch Acronis without Windows, e.g. if the system does not start. It is not available in trial.
  8. Third-party tools - from partners of Acronis, such as Log Viewer, WinPE-based Media Builder.

True Image review

Frankly, we were not expecting to mention malware and ransomware in Acronis True Image review, which is a backup tool primarily. But as data and files could get infected and carry malware during data transfers, this is actually a relevant component. And Acronis provides it.

Acronis Active Protection is a feature against ransomware and crypto-mining. Dashboard displays information about activity, monitored processes, files, memory, etc. Users can input permissions for EXE files that are manually added to Managed processes list.

During our tests and use of True Image, this feature has not manifested itself in any way (positive or negative), so we can’t judge it. Learn more about Best anti-ransomware tools.

Subscription pricing for True Image ranges from $49 per year per 1 device to $159 per year per 5 devices. There are 9 plans in total for various configurations, which is pretty flexible for users.

Now we have neared the most vital part of Acronis True Image review: testing. We have tested the app on a laptop with Windows 8.1 x64 and 8 GB RAM. There are two logical disks on a hard drive. On a second remote computer we use SSD as storage. Both devices are connected via 1 Gb LAN.

Disk C (150 GB) is the system disk hosting Windows OS, that has been in use for 6 months. 130 GB of it is in use, and in addition, we have added one folder (17 GB, default entries) to the list of exclusions before starting test backup. So we have 113.2 GB to backup here. For this part we keep the default settings: incremental backup method, low operation priority, normal compression level.

Test 1. We launch backup procedure for disk C. From 113.2 GB Acronis takes 102.7 GB to save (reasons and algorithms undisclosed). Normal compression ratio in True Image appears to be around 50%, turning those source 102.7 GB into 53.5 GB at the end. It takes roughly 45 minutes in total.

Acronis True Image tests

Test 2. Disk E (150 GB) is the second logical disk on our laptop, hosting 45 GB of data. 35.5 GB of those are assigned by True Image (leaving out critical/system files, we guess?). Backup process here lasts 13 minutes, and results in 18.1 GB archive, which, again, proves a typical compression ratio of ~50%.

Acronis True Image backup tool

Data from these 2 backup tests is summarized here:

Acronis True Image backup tests
Source Selected, GBCopied, GBBackup, GBDuration, min:secCompression ratio, %Speed, Mbps
C:113.2102.753.544:5052163.2
E:4535.5 18.113:1651187.3

Test 3. To see what happens under different compression ratios, let’s run 4 types (none, normal, high, max) for the same folder to compare. “Users” folder on disk C, containing 92K files and 33 GB in size, will do. In it we have pictures, videos, audio files, documents… pretty typical stuff.

Acronis backup software

We make a backup of this folder 4 times in 4 different compression types. As we see, even None does result in a tiny size reduction. However, do not expect huge compression when put on Max. Acronis recommends using Normal ration, as the optimal one.

CompressionFolder,GBBackup,GBDuration,min:secCompression ratio, %Speed,Mbps
None33,229,844:001,5136
Normal33,224,945:3017107
High33,224,064:0020,575
Max33,223,969:002173

A quote from Acronis website:

The optimal data compression level depends on the type of files stored in the backup. For example, even maximum compression will not significantly reduce the backup size, if the backup contains essentially compressed files, like .jpg, .pdf or .mp3.”

Test 4: Recovery. Flipping sides to imitate situation when one needs to restore data from a backup, we take backup archives created in Test 1 and 2. We find out that the speed of recovery is a bit higher than the speed of backup. See a summary here:

Acronis True Image restore tests
SourceDuration, min:secBackup, GBSpeed, Mbps
C:26:3253.5275
E:9:2218.1263.8

This utility is a “working horse”, worthy of acknowledgement. It is functional, flexible and packed with extra features (disk cloning, anti-ransomware, survival kit, cloud storage,  etc.). At times it causes high RAM and CPU consumption, but other than that we haven’t faced any real trouble, bugs or crashes. All the tests on (intentionally) low-spec laptop have proven real aptitude of this backup tool.

Acronis do only what it must do, and do it successfully

I read a lot of negative feedbacks about Acronis, and most of them aren`t constructive. I think, if you want that software fries two bagels you must use the software that is able to do this, and you have no right require a program to toast your bagels, if it isn`t able for this. Acronis can be used to clone hard drive to a new, backup, full backup of all drives, restore, universal restore. Also, the program offers instruction with rules for using and warnings.

Nice utility with big amount of features and good Support

Acronis has many features, I think I shouldn`t use all of them. There is a restoring function that I need. The program is scalable and it means it can be used by one person or a company. Also, I`m so impressed with its Tech Support. I turned to them several times and always got a fast and useful answer. Don`t afraid "overseas" English, their written English as an American accent.

I like this program, it saved my system

Acronis True Image saved me a lot of times when my computer suddenly didn`t boot. All I had to try and do was insert the bootable DVD that I got once I initial got Acronis, run it and have it restore my complete computer from the antecedently created copy. This program worths its price. It really makes my life easier.

Acronis offers effective backup and restoring with simple using

I used this program once to clone my hard drive to new. I unplugged one of my other hard drives then plugged it to the hard drive and clone it with Acronis. It was really so easy. This program has an intuitively understandable interface that I hadn`t any reason to read instructions. I guess this utility could be used by beginners even if they want to use advanced features like deep cloning. However, I bought Acronis for regular backup and I had no wish to control it. And this program can satisfy my needs in the background.

Acronis is the best replacement of Norton Ghost

I began to use Acronis because of no available Norton Ghost, my favorite utility. But now, I like Acronis Image True more because it does what Ghost did and even more different things that Ghost couldn`t. Acronis has a really nice and easy user interface. Here I can make system images, backups, restore my system if it failures. Moreover, I can setting schedule regular backups or completely stop backup or do it on background mode. Online docs are also so good there.

The best photo for backup and data restoring, but there are some troubles with photos displaying

SO, it`s the best product which fits my needs the most. It provides the best phone folders restoring. But despite these, I`m still fighting with some things: - controlling storage space for backups; - A custom location of Mobile Backup doesn`t work - Photos displaying aren`t good enough, it`s so primitive and not being in any particular order. In conclusion, I`d like to say that Acronis is good software for backup and restoring data after some failures with the system. But it would be better to use something like Google Photos for displaying your photos.

    Good lesson for me

Some time ago, we lost our data for two monthsб because we did not used any backup software connected. We work with sensitive information and cannot use cloud storage for our backups. Therefore, I was looking for a program that can create backups offline. I choose Acronis True Image, because there were a lot of positive reviews about him. And after some time after purchasing, they made a profitable offer to expand the license for 3 PCs, which I accepted.

Restoring takes a lot of time

There is one of the biggest issue of Acronis that overlaps all other issues. It is the speed of restoring! Okay, it uploads fast but doesn`t mean it restores fast. Sometimes I was asked for help with Ransomware. All server data was destroyed. And I decided to use Acronis and run Acronis Cloud Recovery. As a result, it is sitting on 44% restored that lasted 51 hours and 15 minutes! You can use this program even if you want to restore not big data.

    It can`t restore backups! Why?

It is the shame that the newest Acronis version works so bad. How can it not restore backups? Awful. So, you can`t restore backups if you create a full backup and series of differential backups and get full and recent differentials off-site. Maybe you can do it for the most recent. But Acronis says that it is should be like that.

    Well, but isn`t so good

It`s so-so. I`d been using Acronis True Image from 2010 to 2018. For that period, I needed restoring only several times after drive failures. There is a usual backup. Restoring isn`t so good. Sometimes the program works, sometimes no. I never used the Cloning function to work-period. I also tried other similar programs but continued using this utility. It`s because "sometimes you`re better off with the devil you know than the devil you don`t".

    Perfectly saves time

I started my work with this program by downloading the trial version. I am a certified system administrator, but I had some difficulties with settings. A week after the purchase, I had the possibility to test this software in the "real world", because my laptop change loading window to error window. The standard Windows recovery methods didn`t help me. After carefully learning user manual, I was configure Acronis in the right way and restore my SSD. I also want to thank the Acronis technical support, which patiently guided me through the mazes of the user manual.

You can use it only for backuping small data

I was satisfied when I just started work with Acronis. It works faster then IDrive and even I had some problems with the program, the support team helped me quickly. But now I can argue that Acronis isn`t a good app anyway. It can`t even successfully perform the first backup. The program gives a lot of failures and always does full duplicates of drives. I don`t recommend this program, but just for the case if you want to create a backup for a small data or a single drive.

Acronis already isn`t right to use, there are more advanced programs as R-Drive Image

When I`m using Acronis and R-Drive Image on my system with UEFI and GPT disks, I see the following things: 1. After creating a full disk image compression of 20GB(SSD) is equals: 8.2GB (Acronis) and 7.8GB (R-Drive); 2. Compression time: (4.5-6) ??minutes (Acronis) and (3-3.5) minutes (R-Drive); 3. Time for full disk-recovery: (12-25) minutes (R-Drive) and 3.5 minutes (Acronis); Notes: I have been using Acronis for 8 years. At the time of using Motherboard on Acronis BIOS, I practically DID NOT EXCEED! Tried R-Drive from time to time, but returned to Acronis... But now motherboards are with UEFI and from that time Acronis became fatally. It lets me down with probability P = ~ 0.5, i.e. ~ 50% luck ... and 50% - reinstall OS... So I choose R-Drive instead of Acronis.

This program is better than some of the others, and it really works. You should only know how it to use

Everyone who gives negative feedbacks for Acronis True Image can`t use it rightly. I never have any problems with this program. Especially by partitioning sections it is program number 1. For example, for earlier Norton Partition magic, if you do not rescan after each split with a Scandisk (chkdsk) of Windows, then there can be some errors.

    New version doesn`t work

I`d been using this program since 2009, and it was a really nice product. But after updating to 2016 version, it sometimes worked good, but subsequently, I began to notice some errors in its work. And when I installed the newest version I understand that it has become complete trash. Now ATIH always crashes after creating a new backup plan. It also crashes after enumerating directories on the source or after selecting NAS directories. I turned to Acronis Support and they asked me to access my system. I`m sorry, but NO! I only want to use software that works. Don`t even try to use this software.

    • Cons
      • It can`t create a new backup plan, because it would be crashed.

    Great

In Acronis True Image 2019, they finally added full support for SSD disks. This is a very important fact for me, because it allowed me to change my old and slow HDDs on SSDs, which greatly accelerated data processing. I also noticed that True Image, unlike many other programs, doesn`t take into account free space in the size when it clones disk data. This means that the image of disk will be equal only to the size of the files that were on it.
    • Pros
      • Support SSD
    • Cons
      • They must did it earlier

It was very easy installation. I like this program for excellent backuping.

I`ve just installed Acronis True Image 2019 and I`d like to notice the simplicity of the installation process and use. That`s a really easy user interface, I guess. The programs like that are very useful today, because of the big amount of different malware, spyware and so on. With Acronis, you can easily make a backup of your hard drive as an image. Trust me, there no best feel then know about safe your system. So I prefer doing backups regularly for the system safe.

Acronis is useful for me, I`ve been already using it for several years

I`ve been using Acronis for some period of time to back up my home system of computers. I backup all PC to NAS every week. I also used Acronis for restoring a hard drive after a crash or replacing hard drive to SSD. By the way, the Cloning function is very comfortable. There was only one issue that I had with Acronis 2019 I couldn`t create creating bootable media to a USB drive. But I created a DVD boot disk. Okay, it more easy to store and keep DVD boot disks, but there are people who prefer using USB drives. And what is interesting I hadn`t any problems in creating bootable media to a USB drive with Acronis 2017. I don`t understand why the 2019 version has this problem.
    • Pros
      • Effective working
    • Cons
      • No opportunity to create bootable media to a USB drive

    This program saved my time!

I have a small system partition and one day I started getting pop-ups about "Low Disk Space" (not enough space on Drive C). I was scared because it could happen that the OS could not boot. But there wasn't any rubbish for removal: I needed everything. And I couldn't reinstall the OS because I have a lot of programs installed. Therefore, installing these programs can take a long time. I was looking for a solution that could help me and there was an article about Acronis True Image. I thought “maybe this could help?”. That was the right thought! In just a few clicks, I backed up my data. I then redistributed the free space (added to Dick C) and recover the backup to the system disk. The program also has malware protection (more protection is not minus) and a system cleaner that I used before archiving.

      • The system cleaner.
      • Backup to cloud

    Big amount of Cloud memory

My Laptop does not have a big amount of memory, so I asked my self where I could store all of my recovery data. Acronis provides a gigantic amount of 1 terabyte cloud memory which is more than enough for modern PC users. I have freed up a lot of disk space by using cloud memory of the program I also liked the Active Protection which have blocked two of unlikely processes in Task Manager.

    • Pros
      • 1 terabyte of cloud memory
