How to recover data on Windows
The first step is to download the latest iBoysoft version from the download center. The next step is to work with the setup file to complete the full installation during which you need to activate the software package. To do this, you must enter a license key, which will be sent to the verified email. In general, the installation/uninstallation procedures are rather trivial (as for any software).
When the app launches, the hard drive segments are displayed in the main window - these are the sources from which it will be possible to recover data. In terms of usability, a product deserves the highest rate, as all the necessary options are minimized to work effectively with the environment.
In general, the recovery procedure consists of the following three steps:
- Selecting a drive (such as a hard drive).
- Scanning the specified area.
- Using the preview function and directly retrieving the information you are looking for.
Possible data recovery segments by iBoysoft are formatted drive, RAW partition, lost partition, hard drive, flash drive, Bitlocker data, deleted files, other data. Let’s consider deleted files as an example, for this segment the procedure consists of four steps.
- Step 1. Select a drive you want to restore from the list of drives.
- Step 2. Scan a drive.
- Step 3. View the search results and select the files to restore.
- Step 4. Make sure the files have been properly restored.
It should be noted that iBoysoft warns that recovering information is a complex process and that the outcome of the recovery depends on the particular data loss environment.
In the Windows Data Recovery tab there are useful instructions on topics such as fixing a damaged flash drive, recovering SD card data, converting RAW to NTFS, fixing CHKDSK, recovering data in Windows 10/8/7/XP, etc. This indicates that the developers have taken into account the needs of demanding users. A nice bonus is the option to use Free edition for free, in fact this is a software testing that allows you to recover up to 1 Gb of digital information.
How to recover data on macOS
The installation process is as easy as it is on the Windows operating system. Data recovery segments on Mac include deleted files, APFS drive, encrypted APFS, unmounted drive, unreadable drive, external drive, formatted drive, system crash data.
Let’s consider recovering files that have been deleted from Mac Trash:
- Step 1. Selecting a drive to check for deleted files, and click Scan.
- Step 2. When the scan is complete, view all the files and click Recover for the ones you need.
- Step 3. Make sure the files have been properly restored.
As with the Windows OS, for macOS, developers have compiled a comprehensible and concise set of various manuals. For instance, Recover deleted files on macOS.
There are two modes of scanning: fast and deep. By default it is set to Fast. A hard drive of 120Gb has been scanned in less than 7 minutes, uncovering a surprising amount of files. Deep scan of the same hard disk has taken about 40 minutes. Then a list of found files appears, and there are 3 tabs with different sorting options: type, time (of creation), path.
While the scanning is still in process, if you see the files you require, you can stop the scanning process before it is over. Files are available for preview if they are not bigger than 5 Mb, and even small videos can be previewed before recovery. Select the files, press the Recover button. Next window suggests buying iBoySoft to get all the benefits. At this stage, you can as well skip it.
Unbootable Macs. iBoySoft offers a solution for recovering files even in the case when your OS does not load and you did not have the recovery software installed previously. To do this, you only need Internet access and preferably an external hard drive. The software can be directly launched from its server with command line in Recovery Mode without installation. Enter the Recovery mode: press the Power button on Mac and at the same time press the combination Option + Command + R.
After that, you can proceed in the similar way to the regular recovery of data: choose a disk, scan, pick files to recover, choose location. It is strongly recommended to use an external hard drive for this task. For other masOS versions, the recovery process is a bit different. You will need another device: Mac, PC, or smartphone (instructions).
For starters, let’s see what generally happens and how long it takes under typical circumstances. Say, we have a flash drive (SanDisk Cruzer Slice USB with a PDF file previously removed from it. We launch a Deep Scan. The 7.48 GB drive was scanned in 9 minutes, which is very close to similar software like Recuva, MiniTool, Paragon. It found our pdf file and restored it without a problem, everything is quite simple and effective so far.
NB: You might want to look into backup software.
Now, let’s go through several common situations when you’d require iBoysoft to recover lost data.
Scenario 1. Lost files on an internal drive.
Open the program and select the disk on which the files were lost (in our case, its D). Select the scan mode (fast or deep scan) and click the Next button. As we’ve noted previously, deep scanning takes a very long time, so a default quick scan is always a preferable option. The downside is that scanning progress is not shown as a percentage.
The scan results are presented as a hierarchical tree of folders with the data contained in them. For convenience, a preview of files is available, which allows us to quickly select only those files that we need to recover, and not process all data. Once you have determined which files should be restored, select it and click the Recover and select the location.
The program warns that files should be stored in a new place, different from the source. The next step is to view the results in the folder with recovered files on the new drive. You can also save the scan results for further use by selecting the Save Session function.
Scenario 2. Lost files on an external drive.
Similarly to the previous case, we select a drive where information was lost. In this example, we will recover data from the flash card, so for scanning we choose an external USB drive. Follow all the same steps under fast scan mode. Also, there’s a helpful short video guide about this.
Scenario 3. Corrupt data.
A USB stick was also used to simulate damaged/corrupt files, as it often happens, due to a virus/malware. All files, when transferred to PC or another drive, are displayed as shortcuts and cannot be opened. To tackle this issue, we take the following actions: scan a USB drive, preview files and folders, and restore.
After reviewing and analyzing the iBoysoft Data Recovery tool, we can draw the following conclusions. The application works well on Windows and Mac operating systems, not causing any problems. There is a slight delay during program startup, but in terms of performance it is not critical. Functionality is basic, which is comfortable to do the job it is meant to. Being able to work with a variety of storage drives is a qualitative proof that iBoysoft developers are meeting current market requirements.
- Clear interface, easy UX
- Fast scan mode is relevant and productive
- Scan results preview and file selection
- The ability to save a scan session
- Free trial version
- Only up to 1GB recovery for free
- Deep scan mode is quite lengthy
- In process time counters display unreliable values
Having familiarized ourselves and tested iBoysoft Data Recovery software, we can say it is effective and easy to use (even a beginner can handle it).
