AVG Antivirus Free review and testing (April 2019)

For online and overall protection, the program offers features like antivirus (against viruses, spyware, ransomware, malware), web and email protection, PC performance scanner (detects junk files, registry issues, etc.), file shredder, do-not-disturb mode, browser extension for payments.

How to install AVG antivirus

To download AVG antivirus, visit the official website, and click “FREE Download” to begin. After the file called “avg_antivirus_free_setup.exe” is downloaded, run it, wait for the program’s full launch, choose the interface language and click “Install”. Use advanced install settings by pressing “Customize” - to specify elements to install manually, e.g. AVG Secure Browser or AVG SafePrice. Everything quite typical. Next, you’ll receive a message about PC issues, which is actually AVG prompting to acquire PC TuneUp tool as 1 or 2 year subscription, or try it for 60 days free. If you want it, enter personal data and payment method, if not - skip it.

Interface

The interface, in general, is quite pleasant, yet it can be both easy and hard to comprehend, as it all just works, but there are lots of functions and settings crammed in. For example, Secure VPN with 60-days trial but you have to input credit card or PayPal number first anyway. Similarly, the Password Protection, if you choose to perform a scan, to fix issues afterwards, you have to pay. There’s also Driver Updater tool (that can also be installed separately) and it is free.

Settings

Let’s take a look at settings in AVG Antivirus Free menu. General section includes:

  1. Enable reputation services (compares threats to samples in the database)
  2. Enable CyberCapture (analyses unrecognized files with 2 options - block/allow)
  3. Scan for PUP (potentially unwanted programs)
  4. Do not show notifications
  5. Enable email protection
  6. Set up pop up window
  7. Protect antivirus settings by a password
  8. Maintenance (delete old scan logs, clear history, maximum quarantine size, etc.)
  9. Exceptions (indicate file path or URL)
  10. Special scans
  11. Privacy settings

Components section contains:

  1. File Shield - checks all files on PC, blocks suspicious ones.
  2. Behaviour Shield - identifies apps/programs/processes with suspicious activity.
  3. Email Shield - protects email from receiving dangerous files, and also prevents sending out such files.
  4. Web Shield - protects a PC during online browsing, blocks unreliable websites and pop-ups, prevents downloading ransomware.
  5. SafePrice browser extension - finds best prices on trusted online web stores.
  6. Do Not Disturb mode - turns off 3rd-party notifications, pauses Windows updates.

Troubleshooting section offers tools such as rootkit scan at startup, anti-rootkit monitoring, anti-exploit-module, AVG self protection module, limit guest account access, passive mode, restore default settings. In the Quarantine section, where all the infected files after scanning are stored temporarily. To delete files completely, without ability to restore, use File Shredder.

Let’s check the Do not disturb mode. As we see, there are 2 programs automatically added - Chrome and MPC player - it means when any of them is running, no other notifications will be displayed. We can turn this mode off, surely, as well as add more programs.

Now, the main functionality of AVG or any other antivirus out there: scanning. In Computer tab we press Scan Computer button, wait and check the scan results. This process will rummage through user’s PC to find potential viruses and threats, but also will check for performance and online privacy issues.

If you press a gear sign next to Scan Computer button, you have a selection of different scan types: full scan, deep scan (intensive searche for malware), USB/DVD scan, file/folder scan, performance scan (PC TuneUp), boot-time scan, and there’s also a scheduler. To run a boot-time scan you have to restart a PC.

EICAR & AMTSO testing

For testing, first we visit eicar.org and download the following test files:

eicar.com eicar.com.txt eicar_com.zip eicarcom2.zip
68 Bytes 68 Bytes 184 Bytes 308 Bytes

Then we’ve tried to do the same via AVG Secure Browser: we were able to visit the link but couldn’t load a file, immediately receiving a warning notification. In result, all 4 out of 4 threats were successfully detected and blocked by AVG Antivirus Free.

Then, we visited amtso.org and conducted testing for desktop solutions in few stages. First, to test protection against manual download of malware is enabled. Result - it is, access blocked. Second, protection against a drive-by download - successful too. Third, protection against download of compressed malware - works, we were not able to load a ZIP file with malware. Similarly, AVG stopped the download of infected ZIPX, 7-ZIP, WinRAR, TARGZ, ACE, CAB, JAR, LZH, RAR-SFX, ZIP-SFX files. All in all, out of 16 loaded files 15 were identified and blocked by AVG antivirus active mode, and 1 was stopped in passive mode.

Antivirus scanning test

Finally, we ran all 4 types of scan available in AVG antivirus. During the first one (full PC scan), AVG found several cryptocurrency miner files, that were loaded into our PC previous to the antivirus. Scanning times were, of course, different and pretty efficient overall:

  1. Full scan: 3 minutes
  2. Deep scan: 90 minutes
  3. Selective scan (local 200GB drive, 55GB free): 2 minutes
  4. Boot-time scan: 34 minutes

AVG antivirus Android mobile version

AVG AntiVirus Free 2019 for Android with antivirus/anti-malware, anti-theft, app lock, camera protection tools is quite popular among users - over 100,000 installs, according to Google Play. It works silently in the background, and has interesting mobile-tailored options. For example, in case a phone or tablet is lost or stolen, open Anti-Theft website via AVG user account and you’ll be able to locate a device on Google Maps. Then, you can remotely lock it and turn on alarm signal at full volume, and moreover, you can remotely delete all the data from your phone.

Other cool features are only available in paid Pro version of AVG mobile app. Like App Lock to block apps, gallery, messages on a phone by a PIN-code. Or Camera Trap alerting a phone owner about attempts to gain access to the device by taking a picture of the intruder and sending it in a message.

Verdict

AVG AntiVirus FREE worked well as an antivirus in our case, it intercepted threats and blocked the download of harmful files. It also offers plenty of additional tools and options, though all of them aren’t free. All in all, a fine decent product for those who look for a free antivirus today.

  • easy-to-use and nice interface
  • positive performance, real threat detection
  • insignificant impact on PC resources
  • 26 interface languages

  • not completely free, as Pro version costs $80 annually
  • no button for expanding the main window, only scroll
  • longer startup time with antivirus running
  • many additional tools ads and offers, e.g. driver updater

So, despite mixed views on AVG Antivirus Free, we can recommend it, no doubt. And if you’re not buying it, read further.

AVG antivirus alternatives

Avast! Free Antivirus - it has a striking advantage, being completely free. It doesn't slow down the system and uses little resources.

Avira Free Antivirus combines artificial intelligence (AI), cloud technologies, and a virus scanner. It will protect personal data from ransomware, trojans, and spyware.

Norton Security Deluxe is a powerful antivirus to protect sensitive data on local drives, but it isn’t free - it costs $49.99 annually, with a free 30-day trial.

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition is one the best choices if you want something simple and with impeccable protection.

Malwarebytes Free is rather an addition to antivirus, as alternative. It provides protection from malware, spyware and ransomware and is very popular among users. The annual subscription costs $40 and there is a free 30-day trial.

Perfect for gamers

I'm a gamer, so I need an antivirus that doesn't affect system performance. I tried different protection software until found Avg Antivirus. In addition to excellent protection, there is a great feature “Do Not Disturb Mode”. It turns off all the messages and nothing can distract me while playing. Also, it has the ability to enable maximum performance mode when all system resources are focused on a single program. I always use it when playing and to be honest, I see a wonderful result: the rare freezing of games has disappeared.

There is one more feature I like- Email Shield. I often send and receive emails, because I am a freelancer and I communicate with clients via email. And the email protection module allows me to sift out suspicious attachments.

Pros:

  • Doesn’t affect system performance
  • Attractive interface design

CONS:

  • Many additional paid features (in reality, separate programs)

Not bad antivirus, but awful business strategy

I had a free trial version of AVG antivirus, but in 25 days before my trial expires I got notification of charging my PayPal. It appeared, that AVG billed me for a full version. I tried to cancel it, but I wasn`t able to. I googled my problem and found out that it is quite an ordinary work of this company. It`s very unfair and it should be stoped.

Pros:

  • Free trial version worked well

CONS:

  • Awful methods of making money

Free trial was good, but their attitude to customers is bad

After trying the free version of AVG, I decided to buy a full version when the trial expires. But then I got a problem with versions - my paid version was changed on a trial in a day. So we got in touch with AVG`s customer support, but they wanted to sell us a repair kit because up to them, the problem was my computer. But I found nothing, besides free trial version was working well. I was frustrated with the situation of selling me by this company. And another awful thing is that when I asked for stopping my subscribe, but they refused, and it was a very unpleasant experience.

Pros:

  • Free trial is good

CONS:

  • Their full version is not working, and tech support is just trying to rob you

Scam company, which will make you pay to uninstal their product

I installed a free version of this program, but then I decided to try out another antivirus. So I wanted to uninstall AVG, but I just couldn`t do that. Of course, I`ve tried to get in touch with customer support, but when they found out that I have a trial version, I got told, that I should upgrade to a full version to get support. So now I have 1.21 GB of my hard disk unavailable because of this scam.

Pros:

  • None

CONS:

  • To uninstal free version you`ll be forced to pay.

I can't complain, it's a good product.

I have used AVG for over six years now. I bought a new two year license as my old two year license was expiring in five days. After installing it, the old AVG did not uninstall and reminders kept coming up on the old license telling me it was expiring and then expired after five days of reminders. Now, I knew this would continue for forever if I did not get the old program uninstalled. The good thing, I have never got a virus using AVG, (knock on wood) so I like the product.

Pros:

  • Highly configurable

CONS:

  • License issues

Only one complaint on new version - not recommended for old PC

I have to agree avg is a good antivirus..My complaint is the newer versions keep getting bigger and bigger. This goes for Avast as well. I did a custom install of the new AVG only installing the File and Behavior shields and it installed at 338MB. I think this is excessive for only two shields along with the basic protection. It does the job it claims to do but on a PC with a Pentium 4 processor, I do not recommend it unless you're ready for slow performance. I've noticed the newer versions are being designed for newer computers, but not everyone can afford to go out and buy a new PC.

Pros:

  • Respectable protection and fast performanc

CONS:

  • Very similar to Avast

Great antivirus, good as any on the market

I use AVG anti virus because I KNOW it works. It's better than others, and in fact has done me a lot of good in finding viruses which high-end antivirus software didn't. As purely anti-virus software, it's a bit cheaper and certainly more efficient than most. It can be used by anybody at any level of online savvy with no problems at all. It's a no-fuss package, and pretty smooth for all types of operations, from scans to online security in various forms. Updates are easy, and everything runs like clockwork for just about all operations.

Pros:

  • Lots of features

CONS:

  • Engine lacks features

It's an antivirus product with a name that used to mean something positive.

I used to use AVG free several years back and it was honestly pretty good. Lightweight, un-intrusive, everything you could want out of a civilian level antivirus product. Then they spammed popups for upgrading to the full version and it got pretty annoying so I went a different direction for a few years; I had heard they got bought out by a competitor but it was honestly really sad to see them change their business model.

Pros:

  • Free, that's about it

CONS:

  • Popups

Nice tool, but requires constant updating, and the newest version 9 is more for faster CPU and more RAM

I have used AVG Free the past two years. It has worked fine (great?) and there have been no virus incidents. On trying to upgrade from 7.5 to new 8.0, I have one XP machine that can't make the upgrade-on install, keep getting message that there is "another" av or security package running. Numerous messages back and forth to their help forum (which is responsive although all volunteer) has not yielded resolution and no one can find this "other" av. Obviously AVG has been around a while and is a "free" program that gets good grades.

Pros:

  • Has Real Time Protection

CONS:

  • Causes lag in older systems

AVG Antivirus Free will protect your machine against ransomware, which is very valuable since the majority of competitors provide such protection with paid plans only.

Used to be a very good product. Years back, AVG was a good product. It had a high detection rate and a small system footprint. Those two characteristics, along with being free, made it a popular choice for computer security. In recent years, it has become bloated, cumbersome, installs adware fueled toolbars that do nothing more than default browser security settings accomplish. AVG Secure Search behaves much like malware in that it takes the use of advanced tools to remove, and it will hijack your search engine. Read all of the complaints on AVGs forum about this feature. Not good, AVG. You keep shooting yourself in the foot by worrying more about revenue and less about making your product reliable and as a result, your reputation amongst security professionals keeps falling. You are only popular with newbies and those who don't know that there are better alternatives.

Pros:

  • It is fast and lightweight

CONS:

  • Free version does not have a firewall, password protector or VPN

Exceptional anti-virus protection

Easy to use and activate. Worth the price, just in ease of useability. Once I started playing with it, I found I can "locate" myself where I want, within their list. It definitely makes me feel safer when connected online. Only negative is that when connected, I can't talk to other devices, even on same network (home).

Pros:

  • Fast and offers tons of tools

CONS:

  • Resource hog

Excellent malware protection

I have tried AVG anti-virus software a few times over the last several years. While it may not be my top favorite it is right up there. I think that a huge factor as to why I like AVG is that they do offer a free version. The last time I downloaded it just a few weeks ago it was because my old software had expired and it was just not in the budget to buy new at the moment. While I did start out with the free version of AVG anti-virus I have upgraded to the Ultimate because I wanted some of the features that were not on the free version. It was rather expensive, actually the most I have ever spent on anti-virus software, but I love the secure shopping feature and it does allow me to install on all of our devices. I shop way too much online and love that added piece of mind that this software offers.

Pros:

  • The interface is very simple

CONS:

  • No parental controls

AVG Antivirus does a decent job of protecting your computer from internet attacks

I use AVG for my laptop, cellphone and tablet. It successfully detects all the treats (had no infection issues for 3 years since I started using it), and it would not overuse resources. It can have it for free, which is great, and looks like it`s doing its job properly. But all those nagging pop-ups. Way too many. Support is good, but I had not many reasons to contact them.

Pros:

  • It has full-fledged free versions for Windows, Mac, and Android

CONS:

  • Few extras, if compared to most rivals

Offers nice core protection and even more features/

I've been a paid subscriber to AVG for about 4 years and have only had good experience. The product is easy to use and does a good job (so far...fingers crossed!). I have added the VPN service recently in addition to the PC cleanup utility. I just pay annually, on receipt of the renewal notice. Not sure why anyone would complain about being auto-charged! When I bought the VPN service I mistakenly quoted a wrong email address, and when I corrected it I got billed a second time. But a phone call sorted that quickly and my refund appeared on my credit card statement within a few days. The only issue I've had is with the PC cleanup tool which seems to erase any stored passwords or login credentials to things like Skype, which is a bit annoying, but maybe there's a good reason for that. I'm happy overall!

Pros:

  • Strong lab results

CONS:

  • Pointless performance scan

It is an excellent virus protection

Not only the antivirus but the maintenance program for both desktop, laptop and iPhone for $40 per year makes it all very affordable. All my electronics are getting old and I still have no desire to replace with AVG watching over them. The anti virus is the free version and to my knowledge I haven't had an issue since using AVG AntiVirus.

Pros:

  • Easy to install & run

  • Initial scan slower than average

One of the better free utilities which also doesn't crash your computer.

For a free antivirus program, this is pretty darn good. It detects baddies with the best of them. The only problem is that it is a resource hog. If you have a fairly decent computer, it should be fine, but if you have a computer with a fairly weak processor, like a run of the mill netbook, be prepared for things to slow down. I put it on an Acer Aspire V5-122P-0889, which has only a 1Ghz processor ( I didn't pay for this notebook and never would for something so weak, but got it as a freebie from the eMachines class action suit involving floppy drives), and the computer didn't like it, to be blunt. When it was running a scan it was using 92% of the CPU. When only monitoring, it didn't use nearly that much, but it still slowed the system down as a whole, and enough to make me uninstall it and use the Windows defender that came with Windows 10 (it's a seldom used computer, and only for fun when I do, NEVER using it for something involving personal information, so I don't need great protection).

Pros:

  • Modular components installation

CONS:

  • Some technical errors

Has about all the features you'll need in an anti-virus.

Finally, an antivirus that does not hog system resources. It also runs virus checks in the background daily and it automatically downloads updates. I'm in the computer repair business and will use AVG to locate and to remove viruses from clients' computers. It is easy to configure and takes up a minimal amount of hard drive space. I've performed tests against Norton, McAfee, TrendMicro, Nod32, F-Secure and found that AVG finds and eliminates/heals more than all the other antivirus programs.

Pros:

  • Fairly quick whole computer scan

CONS:

  • Doesn't have a firewall

I have been using avg for a long time this product is good

I've had the 2015 version for 2 years and its a fairly good Anti-virus software product. Its kept me virus free for the past 2 years so I can't complain. However sometimes the Firewall component fails once every few days, but a restart fixes it and gets it up and running. I should uninstall and reinstall but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Pros:

  • Monthly plan

CONS:

  • Bad customer support

Very complicated program instalation

AVG Ultimate is the first bad experience antiviral software I've ever experienced in over 25 years of desktop computers. It's a money pit which needs costly technical support when something go wrong with it. Installation was complicated. I installed Windows 10 when it first came available on top of Windows 7. I've had no problems with any software. But AVG failed to install. So I called their tech support which informed me that I would have to pay over $50 for them to "fix" my computer by uninstalling all the hidden antiviral software entries in the Windows Registry. Then the software did install.

Pros:

  • No-strings free

CONS:

  • Install complications or setup issues

An accurate antivirus and strong all-round performer

AVG with Spybot & Disconnect Me has never failed. AVG with Spybot and Disconnect Me have been 100% effective on 10 computers for over a decade. Other than getting a message I need to delete old and download new version every 2 years, it auto updates, runs in background. Best combo is AVG, Spybot and Disconnect Me. The pkg has never failed.

Pros:

  • Powerful interface

CONS:

  • Confusing knowledgebase

Completely averadge product as for protection, but has big problems with updates

As for a free product, it`s okay - nothing too good or too bad, except for one really annoying thing. Updates are very common, and here it`s not a good thing, because when it`s updating, then you`re not able to use your PC for half an hour (I`m using Windows 10). And this doesn`t stop even with all auto-updates turned off. Last week I had to repair my PC because AVG was shutting my PC down because of graphic error. I`m leaving this software.

Pros:

  • Averadge protection

CONS:

  • Awful updates

AVG is very easy to use. Thus, it is one of the best options for users who have never tried any antivirus.

Good, a solid 4 out of 5. I am amazed that such an amazing product is available for free, thank you AVG makers! However, in my experience, AVG Free Download sometimes does not detect email viruses which my Norton easily pick up. When AVG is set to scan email, Norton will intercept the email viruses which AVG has deemed safe (and certified safe!). I now have Norton set to scan emails instead. I also run both anti virus programs at the same time on my computer just in case one does not pick up viruses that the other does. Overall however, I give this product a very good 4/5! And you sure can't beat the price!

Pros:

  • Easy to operate even for non-specialists

CONS:

  • The free version offers only basic protection

It`s a good free option that protects your computer from ransomware and other internet threats.

AVG Antivirus does its job, but not without a lot of hassle.. Once the go-to free antivirus, AVG's quality has dropped dramatically as QA and customer support and appreciation have seemingly dwindled. Plagued with issues like errant trial timer messages, false positives, and ceaseless and annoying ads that interrupt your work, even on the free version, these issues almost aren't worth the protection they provide, given the abundance of ad-free alternatives that do the same thing, if not even better.

Pros:

  • It scored very high in independent tests as a tool for malware protection

CONS:

  • Average anti-phishing performance

Horrible antivirus program

It seemed to scan everything. came up with some 'warnings' every now and then (i knew my laptop had SOMETHING off about it) but .. it didnt seem to be able to fix anything. now after seeing the other reviews im wondering if it was the cause for my computer crashing repetitively X-{ i had to completely reformat my computer from scratch. i regret ever hitting the download button. and i got it straight from the site itself. how effed up.

Pros:

  • Low system usage

CONS:

  • Crashed my laptop

Very good free antivirus

I have not had to use customer support very often. But I had some confusion over new certification numbers when renewing my service, and it took several calls to straighten information out. We have more than one computer and had various 'firewalls' for comparison. Like that I can scan a site or email prior to opening through AVG. Like that I can add my smart phone at no additional charge. Like the pricing for this service. Very reliable and communicative. Easy to run and find content.

Pros:

  • Easy to use

CONS:

  • No longer offers web protection browser extension

t is the best of all the anti-virus programs. Plus it is free, which is a bonus.

I've been using various generations of AVG free off and on for some years now and while it's a very good anti virus I have issues with the update system. For cost reasons the updates for the free versions are hosted on cheaper servers than the paid for variant, which is fair enough. But some of the update files are pretty big and the less than ideal connection can be problematic. The scheduled scan is also a bit short on choices, nothing or every day and I don't know many people that run a full scan on a daily basis, so it's a bit of a non choice. My main machines use avast! which I rate highly, but my old W98 machine has been forced to an alternative by the need for license compliance and an easy second on my freebie AV list is AVG.

Pros:

  • Great software for the price

CONS:

  • Big update files

Good protection, but too many pop-ups and also, it slows down your computer

I`ve used AVG for several years and had no problems with any kind of viruses or malware. But I got tired of instant pop-ups, which try to sell me some other their products or get a paid version of antivirus. Also, I had doubts, but I thought that AVG was slowing down my laptop. Some time ago I found out, that Kaspersky is giving a free version of the antivirus, so I decided to try it out. And after VERY hard uninstallation process I got proofs of AVG slowing down my computer. Since then I have no more long starts, shutting down is no longer an issue, because I uninstalled AVG! Also, internet pages loading much faster, and no more pop-up, which appeared every two minutes. So as for me even not a bad level of protection doesn`t cost such slowing down and such amount of pop-ups.

Pros:

  • Good protection

CONS:

  • Pop-ups, slowing down

It's more accurate and reliable than most of the competition

Hey, thank you for this AVG antivirus program! A great one. I wanted to add that this is one of the fastest antiviruses that I have ever used in my life. Other programs slow down the whole system and some even have memory leaks. AVG is much better. I noticed that it works in the background without causing any troubles with the performance. It works wonderfully and does not put any pressure on the system. I personally highly recommend this software.

Pros:

  • Perfect score for blocking malware threats

CONS:

  • The vulnerability scanner must be installed separately

User-friendly interface

AVG was not my first choice for an anti-virus software, however I have found it to be the best I have used. The interface is excellent and very accessible. It is easy to navigate between the different services provided (i.e. internet security, firewall, etc.) and the settings are straightforward. I purchased AVG for a year and have since downgraded to the free version, and one of the biggest selling points for AVG in my opinion is what you get for free. I feel that my computer is safe and secure with the free version of AVG. Most of the packages offered with the paid version are more for convenience than anything else. That is something I have struggled to find in other anti-virus software providers. I have no plans of changing my anti-virus software in the near future. In my experience, AVG is the most user-friendly and secure option out there.

Pros:

  • Fast and reliable

CONS:

  • Not available on iOS

Minimal impact to computer speeds

AVG has been around for quite some time. I have seen different versions of this antivirus but I must say it gets scarier to use every time they upgrade the software. The reason I say this is when you run the scan, you really can't tell what it is really doing. With AVG Ultimate there are lots of features, but I hardly use any of them. The only reason I bought it was so that my emails would be protected (not included in the free version). The good side is that AVG is easy to use. Almost anyone can figure it out. Now I will say that AVG is cheap when compared to other products, but it seems they throw in too many extra features when you buy it, thus jacking up the price. Ultimately, I do trust AVG - they have been around like forever!

Pros:

  • Cheaper than alternatives

CONS:

  • Not Mac-friendly

Very good - to a point!

Working in IT, I had the responsibility for evaluating and implementing several Anti Virus / Anti Spyware products. Having previously used one of the major, Enterprise level products both at work and home, I thought I would compare one of the freeware offerings - specifically AVG. And I was quite impressed by the functions and features as well as the capability of the product. My main concern is that the software appears to be very resource hungry - especially at system start up, and also the free version does not allow the daily scan to be disabled. All in all, great as a free product, and despite the restrictions it's become my AV product of choice at home.

Pros:

  • One of the best free virus detection on the market

CONS:

  • Customer service

It`s not a bad antivirus, but it can stop working any time

AVG was my antivirus for some years and I had no troubles with it. Until ones I woke up and found out that my full version was changed back to a free one. Also, there was an installed AVG browser, and it all was made not by me, but automatically. I`ve tried to log in to my account with a paid version, but I couldn`t. Password change doesn`t work as well - I requested a new password for 6 times, but nothing was sent to my email. And I really worry, because I got autorenewal turned on, and I can`t turn it off, because I can`t log-in.

Pros:

  • It works well

  • It can stop working and install anything it want

AVG Antivirus performs well against known malware.

Fairly accurate, but a resource hog. I've recently tried a newer version of AVG, and seeing the new interface it was given has made it look a lot more professional than it has in the past (has always been one of the minus points). Installation and use are ok, fairly simple, and detection of malware is fairly decent, but, and this is a big but, it is a resource hog, even on a newer system (I tested it on a fast dual-core gaming machine). The on-access scanner component interfered with gaming and general system operation to such an extent that I ended up having it off more than on - this can't be the idea behind resident protection. In addition, doing a manual system scan seemed to take literally forever.

Pros:

  • You can customize AVG Antivirus to their liking

CONS:

  • The performance scans are pretty pointless

It does an excellent job protecting against Mac and Windows malware

The AVG company never disappoints. I am their loyal customer for five or so years. I won`t lie. I did try other programs from time to time, but when I had a problem with malware, only AVG worked for me. I`m very biased, but that was my personal experience with the brand. The only thing I can say against AVG is that they renewed my subscription even though my credit card details were obsolete. I took the issue up with them but was not satisfied with their reply. Has this ever happened to any of you?

Pros:

  • AVG Antivirus is free

  • The software slows your computer more than other antivirus software

AVG is a great antivirus for picky and demanding users since each product has a different mix of features and services capable of satisfying every consumer.

Works great and detection now among the best. The new version works really well for me, very fast scan - much faster than any other AV that I tested. After the latest Avast version which caused lots of problems to me and slowed down the whole system, I went back to AVG and my computer now is much faster again. And when I was looking for alternatives, I found out that the detection is now among the best, way above Avast. Way to go, AVG!

  • Additional tools are really great

  • Not compatible with iPhone

It's great free antivirus program

I had a hard time figuring out all it did in the beginning and the folks at customer support were patient, very clear and concise and extremely respectful and helpful. There is a disk cleaner, there is a web protector, there is an email protector, there are several items to do a variety of things for me including keeping my hard drive cleaned up. I know with AVG I am protected from the latest viruses and will not lose the information I have on my computer nor will it be compromised. I have yet to have an issue with AVG and I've had it for over 5 yrs. I'd say that's reliable by any standard. I would highly recommend this software.

Absolutely worth the price

I operate a computer with an antiquated system for a few online needs. I have experienced viruses like ransomware twice with antivirus protection that I've had to buy. Since I've used the AVG, I haven't had one virus. This software does however, alert me almost every day when I've been exposed to dangerous sites and files. When AVG senses a potential threat, it does slow my computer down. This is probably due to the age of my system and never fails to get my attention by using a small pop-up window. This window list all the threat types that are encountered, and if the virus block is successful, or not. I've had no problems with viruses, so it is doing its job very well. Absolutely worth the price because its protection is flawless. The yearly software updates are also free, but there are advanced system options to purchase if a person chooses. I also love the feature that allows me to choose when notices and updates are displayed.

Pros:

  • Flawless protection

CONS:

  • Can slow your computer

I would recommend AVG AntiVirus to a friend

I find the benefits of the occasional free tune-up trial run one of the most beneficial things about AVG. The computer always eventually gets junk that needs clearing out and it seems to do a good job. I've had it so long, the nag screen is just part of the routine to getting in. Sort of like telling whatever cloud bloatware is installed you don't want to agree to 60GB free for 6 months only to be dependent and then have to buy more...I stop skype routinely so it's honestly not that big a deal to pay for coverage. Other's seem to have way too many false positives. I use AVG and Malwarebytes. I have found using the AVG protected web search useful if I'm ever checking out sites that have a lot of free/share or greyware, which will occasionally will have ransomware links. Bottom line is I'm just used to nag screens and this one isn't that nasty, usually only shows up on a reboot. I can live with that as it stinks to pay for protection and not get it. What I mean is NONE of these shops protects you 100% so when you get something (which you will if you surf and download or click on links from friends social media or emails that get hacked), you'll have to bounce around with difference virus/malware scanners until you get one that can ID the nasty and rip it out or at least quarantine to manually remove its files/startup registry entries, etc.

Pros:

  • Regular antivirus updates

CONS:

  • PC Analyzer has issues

AVG is nothing more than malware, and one step away from being ransomware.

I uninstalled Avast and tried AVG. I used it years ago, and don't remember why I stopped. I just don't care for the intrusive attitude of the software, though you have to deal with a certain amount with all freeware. When I uninstalled, well that's where the trouble starts. AVG won't uninstall. It no longer shows in my uninstall list (I use Iobit uninstaller), but it's there every time I boot up. I've seen some bad software over the years, but this one takes the cake. Any antivirus that actively intimidates by refusing to allow you to uninstall, is a virus itself. At the very least, malware. Don't bother going to their website for advice, that's a joke as well.

Pros:

  • It does work fairly well

CONS:

  • Imposible to uninstall

Formerly good software gone bad...

I've used AVG Free for probably a decade and I always used to recommend and install it for people. I've even sold a couple of paid versions to businesses based on my experiences with their free product. But at some point not too long ago, I started noticing that this software was drifting from its honest, minimal roots into that awful category we call bloatware - where software starts getting really large and resource-intensive, and begins to advertise itself as a "suite" although most of its new 'features' are just superfluous window dressing. Then the free version links start getting smaller and harder to find. There was the LinkScanner debacle, the false-positive keygen deception which continues even now, and my favorite - the "no active components" failure which seems to occur without warning or even notice after it has happened. All of this as the quality of protection has absolutely tanked.

Pros:

  • Blocks 99% of malware

CONS:

  • Large, intrusive pop-ups
