IObit Uninstaller is a “Swiss army knife” for software uninstalling - it will invincibly uninstall unnecessary software and remove the traces. Bulk Crap Uninstaller
Free

Available on

Key Features

  • Program search filters.
  • Simulate uninstallation
  • External tools

A little and free uninstaller software with a punchy name. You won’t be annoyed with ads too, though the interface is a bit “over the place”. Programs list is great: color marking (checked, unchecked, unknown), various search filters, tips and info properly placed. Several backup options at hand - backup of registry keys, restore points, backup before traces removal. Uninstalling can be conducted in few ways as well: standard deletion, quiet in the background, manual deletion, file or catalog removal, via Windows Installer. One curious feature is “Simulate uninstallation” - to imitate removal and see the effect, yet without actual de-installation. Other useful aspects include OS quick access (system recovery, troubleshoot installation, etc.), startup manager (to include/exclude programs, extensions, processes), export of program data (.xml or .bat formats), user rating system. Bulk Crap Uninstaller is also available as portable app.

Pros:

  • Free and portable
  • Numerous settings and filters
  • Several ways of uninstallation

Cons:

  • Few interface languages
  • Scarce popup tips
  • No switch between standard and advanced mode

HiBit Uninstaller
Free

Available on

Key Features

  • Browser extension manager
  • Schedule tasks
  • Registry cleaner

Not just an uninstall tool, HiBit is the complex utility to take care of PC/laptop. Though it is free, it contains standard uninstallation features as well as PC optimization options, e.g. junk files removal, registry cleaning, empty folders removal, shortcuts fixing, etc. In addition to all, it is portable. In terms of its main function, HiBit offers force uninstall option - as it often happens that one cannot get rid fully of certain shady programs, and it really works. As for extra features in the package, there are many that make sense. For instance, process manager (shows detailed info and lets you control/stop/uninstall right there), startup manager, and even backup manager (to restore deleted files), browser extension manager, system restore manager (to create restore points for OS). HiBit Uninstaller also lets you “shred” files, fix shortcuts, manage Windows Store apps, clean junk files, schedule tasks, analyze drivers and program components.

Pros:

  • Totally free
  • Extensive set of features
  • Portable version

Cons:

  • No updates
  • Support only via email
  • Only 5 languages of menu

Puran Uninstaller
Free

Available on

Key Features

  • Permanent delete
  • Registry cleaner

Puran Uninstaller is a multifunctional app that has both paid and free versions. Its prime purpose is to keep a PC clean and optimized, to remove junk files and fix registry in order to free the memory. There are separate tools for program removal, cleaning registry, delete history, etc., as well as special “Permanent delete”. Great news is that free version has no restrictions, while standard package costs 40 bucks. All components are placed horizontally which makes things easy to find (some of the key components are disk check, uninstaller, startup manager, service manager, delete empty folder, fix shortcuts, registry cleaner, registry defrag, duplicate file finder, permanent delete, wipe disk, shutdown timer, system information).

Pros:

  • Many additional tools
  • PC optimization options
  • Free version

Cons:

  • Only 1 language available
  • Some functions are slow
  • Commercial license quite costly ($150)

Revo Uninstaller
Free
Free
$ 17.95Pro
$ 20.95Pro Portable

Available on

Key Features

  • Unrecoverable delete
  • Evidence remover
  • Browser cleaner.

A typical representative of this software category, Revo is free and likeable. Though a free version does not have lot to offer, all the basic features are in place: settings, advanced file removal methods, traces deletion, etc. The work starts with a laconic-design interface leading a user towards #1 feature, software uninstaller, which performs its task perfectly fine, plus there is the Unrecoverable delete option. Next is “hunt mode”, that tracks down running processes and stops any of those if needed. Autorun manager, junk file cleaner and browser cleaner speak for themselves. Windows Tools and Microsoft office cleaner tabs help to preserve confidentiality of data. “Evidence remover” tool is great if you wish to erase any history or record of uninstalled programs. Revo also deserves high marks for useful video guides and live chat for user questions.

Pros:

  • Great support, fast replies in a live chat
  • Full uninstallation
  • Hunter mode and other extra tools

Cons:

  • Just-the-basics functionality
  • Force removal available only in Pro
  • Some components are slow

Smarty Uninstaller
$ 12.50Smarty Uninstaller

Available on

Key Features

  • Force uninstal
  • Autorun manager
  • Program info

A simple uninstall tool with no extra features or a niche single-task focused reliable uninstaller? Depends on perception, of course, although removal+reports+history+backup options, paired with 17 languages and $25 annual price per 2 devices definitely make this Smarty product worth noticing. Two key options available: deinstallation and force uninstall, both performing splendidly. System backup setting to make OS copies at any given moment, and the ability to roll back to this point, respectively. Program list can be saved as a report in HTML format, plus there’s uninstall history tab. Beside those, there aren’t many additional tools, except “Autorun” - to add or exclude programs from launching along with PC, customization - to adjust a theme, background color, font, etc.; and multiple tutorials along with support via email.

Pros:

  • Customization options
  • Fully-functional trial
  • Automatic updates

Cons:

  • Limited functionality
  • Costly price
  • No cleaner and optimization tools

Soft Organizer
Free
$ 19.95Pro

Available on

Key Features

  • Windows apps removal
  • Ignore list
  • Backup

A free utility with 2 interface languages (English and Russian) and no crucial restrictions as compared to a paid package. Programs list can be grouped by categories/folders, plus users can create new folders. As for an uninstaller, Soft Organizers has a lot to offer. Firstly, multiple ways of removing software from the system: standard, force uninstall, removal via context menu, removal by dragging the icon onto the program. Deleting traces, monitoring of new installations, program updates are great too, yet only available in Pro. Secondly, the ability to set automatic backups before every removal, but no ability to create specific restore points. Thirdly, a quite unique line of tools, i.e. ignore list / view the traces, Windows 8 and 10 apps removal, reporting - to view and export as .html file. One major bug is that this utility doesn’t update program list in real-time, you will have to restart it. In terms of help and support, the vendor offers the offline manual, FAQ on the website and contact form to get in touch.

Pros:

  • Fully-functional free edition
  • Convenient interface
  • Great set of extra features

Cons:

  • No choice of languages
  • Improper display of program list
  • Lack of separate Help menu

Uninstall Tool

Key Features

  • Registry keys control
  • Force uninstal
  • Startup manager,

Uninstall Tool by Crystalldea can be looked at as Windows uninstall alternative. In it the information about installation date, size, use frequency for every program on PC is displayed. As a bonus, there is autorun editor - showing a task or a registry key due to which a program was installed, as well as location of the app. It is great for less experienced users, as it does not display critical and system applications in the list. For unknown programs there is a "Google" button that launches a search about the program or its publisher. The main feature is Uninstall Wizard, that finds and removes traces left by programs in the file system and registry. The interface, though, requires serious upgrade right now, even though it provides localization in 41 languages. User may filter apps by title, size, date, all the other data, e.g. location folder, can be found in the left-side panel. One curious feature is “Navigate to program directory using Total Commander (if Installed)”, as TC is quite popular among certain circles of users. Finally, there’s a 30-day trial, then you have to purchase to continue.

Pros:

  • Use of registry to detect traces
  • Startup software manager
  • Program installation tracer

Cons:

  • Not integrating with the system
  • No free version, only 30-day trial
  • Limited interface customization

Advanced Uninstaller PRO

$ 23.20AU PRO Daily Health Check

Available on

Key Features

  • Registry cleaner
  • Installation monitoring
  • Backup

If you don’t want to spend time sitting in while long scanning takes place to find and remove unnecessary files, Advanced Uninstaller is a fine small utility to safely remove any software. Easy to grasp (menu on the left, features in the center, and setting on the right), its menu offers additional instruments, such as uninstall, control options, autorun manager, Windows services, start menu cleanup. To work with registry, the following tools exist: duplicate files remover, file compression, file shredder, registry cleaner and optimizer, backup and restore. There’s also Internet tab, use it to delete temp files from the web, view and manage browser history. Software uninstaller works consistently and quickly. Registry features might perform a bit slower, yet do the job in the same reliable manner. And thumbs up for automatic updates (on/off) to the program itself.

Pros:

  • Fast detection and removal
  • Free version available
  • Automatic updates

Cons:

  • No portable version
  • Restart required when changing language
  • No online manager account

Wise Program Uninstaller
Free

Available on

Key Features

  • History
  • Manual updates
  • Standard and force uninstall

Straight to the point, free, both portable and standard versions make Wise one of the most appealing items in the running. Except tabs like Support Center, Menu, Message, Updates, the main area is undoubtedly the program list. It contains name, size, installation date and given rating and search. One can remove programs on PC in a standard way, and any traces left - with the force uninstall. Everything works correctly and quickly. Afterwards, the whole uninstall history is available at any moment. In regards to updating, there’s only a manual option and no automatic, which could be a bummer for some users. Within Support Center tab one can address a message to the vendor, or use Online Help which leads to the website page with instructions and guides. Obviously, live chat would be a much better option.

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Portable version
  • Force uninstall

Cons:

  • No backup for removed apps
  • Localizations of average quality
  • Help center only available online

  • Drag & drop interface
  • Uninstall system apps

Netkony software vendor offers an uninstall utility called App Cleaner & Uninstaller. In it, the list of programs is structured by categories and is searchable, so no need to scroll and scroll to find what you need. Also, for each program a “tree” of its components is visible, thus users may remove a program either completely or only individual files from it (for example, a large log file). Before confirming the deletion, you’ll see a summary info one last time, in order not to miss something and make an informed decision. One-click removal is available in Pro version only. Program categories displayed are Autorun apps, Installed apps, Authentication objects, Browser extensions, Screensavers, Control panel, Plugins and widgets. Any of those can be tossed into ignore list. Recycle tab contains junk files, logs, settings and other traces of apps that had been already uninstalled; and surely users may delete any of those anytime. Key Features

  • Windows apps removal
  • Software uninstaller,
  • Trace scanning

Clean interface, basic functions only and no settings here. The app just has 3 tabs - Applications, Windows Apps, Hot Utilities. Program list does not highlight the installation date, but the good thing is the app saves user filtering for the next time. After deletion, it scans files and registry for traces, but doesn’t always work properly. Plus there’s no force uninstall option. For data recovery feature, you’d have to download and install a separate additional utility. In terms of help materials and support, a link will lead to the online user guide, and it does not have FAQ, so with any questions one would have to contact technical support by email.

Pros:

  • Nothing excessive
  • Easy to use

A novel uninstall software, that also allows to take care of PC speed, disks cleaning, erroneous files fixing. As for such simple utility it takes pretty much disk space compared to similar apps (200 Mb), although it has a lot to offer besides applications removal. Starting typically from a free version, which is drastically limited, prompting to purchase the license to full edition, yet it’s nice that 60-day trial is available beforehand. As part of AVG suite, it also contains ads of their other tools. Three main tabs are Settings, Help and About. PC TuneUp offers full system scanning, which lasts 1 to 2 hours and can find junk files, unnecessary background processes, browser extensions, disk errors, registry issues, etc. Uninstall and backup features, surely, deserve high marks.

ZSoft Uninstaller
Free

Available on

Key Features

  • Temp files finder,
  • Installation analyzer
  • Edit registry keys

Zsoft comes with a bonus: you can edit program installation data (name, version number, publisher contacts, etc.) which then enters the registry. This isn’t a common feature even for PC optimization software. Though it has the interface and UX obsolete as of 2019, the main window allows to perform tasks easily and provides all the details. The list can be exported as .txt file. As extra tools, Zsoft enlists the following: Search and delete tool for temp files, Post-install manager for leftover traces and files, Help panel that displays details about each application, Empty folders finder, Analyze installation that monitors the process to ensure safety.

Pros:

  • Analyze mode for PC reboots during installations
  • Ability to edit system/software information
  • Cleans temporary files

Cons:

  • Removes third-party software only
  • Export in TXT format only
  • Cluttered menu

UninstallView
Free

Key Features

  • Quick filter
  • Uninstaller

A tiny portable tool (213 Kb) is nothing else than a standard uninstaller. It has no algorithm for searching traces and pretty outdated design reminding the Windows XP era. Though one strong advantage exists, which is the ability to detect programs on remote systems or portable drives. Overall, we wouldn’t say it is easy to work with, due to chaotic interface, strangely grouped settings, no updates and poor support channels. For deinstallation, the options are as administrator, bulk and standard. Quick filter option lets users choose to search programs by phrase, word, or all. Then, one can export data about installed programs to .txt or .html file, although it will save only info visible in a main window, not the whole data as in Properties.

Pros:

  • Displaying the source of installed programs
  • Quick filter feature
  • Show items without display name

Cons:

  • Does not find traces
  • Poor interface
  • No check for updates

Comodo Programs Manager
Free

Available on

Key Features

  • Drivers deletion
  • Force uninstall
  • Logs and statistics

Easy and at task of removing programs, drivers, services, system updates, but apparently this is more than just an uninstaller. First off, Comodo uninstaller guarantees full removal for programs that had been installed via its "installer monitoring" mode in the first place. Thus, it won’t be so efficient when it comes to apps and traces existing before it. Secondly, it is compensated by the special Force Uninstalling feature which will remove even programs that have damaged the uninstaller software. Thirdly, it has all you need, starting from program list with detailed data, drivers and services tab, Windows update section, backup before uninstall option, force uninstall, and more. Finally, it is worth nothing this Comodo product is free, easy to use, has familiar red-n-black colors.

Pros:

  • Can remove software with damaged uninstallers
  • Can remove drivers
  • Shows statistics for every software category

Cons:

  • Only 9 languages available
  • Few minor bugs here and there
  • No 100% efficiency in uninstallation

Ashampoo Uninstaller
$ 16.001 PC

Available on

Key Features

  • Snapshots
  • Undeleter
  • File associator

At first look, it may seem a bit overwhelming, but may tips in settings and pleasant interface turn into low learning curve for this product by Ashampoo. It seems like the vendor tried to fill its software with all possible extra features, e.g. snapshot, installation guard, password protection, drive cleaner, registry optimizer, web browser cleaner, startup tuner, file associator and so on. Light or dark color scheme to select. There’s no free version, only 10-day trial with 20 days extensions if you sign up online personally. In regards to uninstalling, Ashampoo works fine, you can just drag a program onto uninstaller icon, however there might be traces of software left after removal, and one cannot perform compulsory manual uninstallation. But if has lots of useful options, such as installation guard (monitors all installations and keeps logs, in automatic mode or exclusions), snapshots (records the system before and after the installation, allowing to copy, extract or restore it), browser cleaner (cleans cache, cookies, history, downloads, passwords, etc.), service manager (starts or halts apps and processes).

Pros:

  • Direct user feedback allowed
  • Tips and guides in every component
  • Snapshots and other extra features

Cons:

  • Questionable in relation to Windows apps
  • No free version
  • Unclear on automatic updates

What is uninstaller software?

What can be easier than to uninstall a program? Just go to control panel and do it, right? Well, not exactly. More often, than one would think, programs won’t be fully uninstalled in this way, and sometimes they are not even listed there. Many apps leave behind “traces”, or even are hard to get rid of, which may slow down the system. A better and more reliable approach is to use uninstaller software - special 3-rd party programs designed specifically to remove programs from computer/device.

Why use uninstallers?

As a program is installed, it not only does accommodate the space mentioned at installation, but also creates registry entries, new files and documents, or even installs additional software. To take care of all that, uninstallers offer extended options - including registry cleaning, new installations monitoring, force uninstall, traces search, automatic downloads management, etc. Some are more advanced than others, of course, and all 25 tools listed above, are decent and worth considering.

Best uninstallers comparison

We have summarized our testing results in a table below for easy comparison. Note that we measured average loads on CPU and RAM while running each program in the background (during uninstallation process the load could go up to 40-50%). In terms of toughest uninstall issues, Revo Uninstaller in its “hunter mode” proved to be the most effective.

IObit Uninstaller Advanced Uninstaller BCUninstaller Slim Computer ZSoft Uninstaller Revo Uninstaller CCleaner
CPU load, % 0.5 0.6 3.8 3.2 1.4 0.5 0.1
RAM, Mb 20 27 54 6 7 12 8
Removed leftovers, Mb 187 184 181 181 188 187 183
Scan time 03:54 02:23 02:30 n/a 20:15 41:25 00:10
Uninstall time, avg 00:20 00:20 00:10 00:05 00:05 00:05 00:05
Freed up memory, Mb 844 80 n/a n/a 130 2600 2500

It is also worth mentioning that none of uninstallers will remove 100% of traces and junk files, though much less will be left. As for the “free vs pro” issue – for home use a free uninstaller will be quite enough, while paid versions provide advanced scanning algorithms and will suite users dealing with software installation on a regular basis. Also, often cleaner software, optimization software and uninstaller software are thrown together as the same or similar tools, say CCleaner. Although uninstallers mainly follow these stages: scanning, restore point, deinstallation, registry and file system scanning, removal of traces.

FAQ

Q: Why use an uninstaller? Can’t I just delete a program from desktop?
A: This is a typical mistake, this way you will only remove a desktop icon. Using Control panel or an external uninstaller software is a proper way.

Q: Are third-party uninstallers worth it? Isn’t Windows good enough?
A: Windows provides Internet Explorer as a browser, but do you use it? Same goes for uninstaller, that is a specialized software with more features, options, settings and better interface.

Q: Do I need to purchase a Pro uninstaller?
A: Not necessarily. Free version of a chosen uninstaller tool will be ok for most users, although Pro version is surely a superior one.

Q: What is the best uninstaller?
A: Tough question, mostly depends on what you need it for, ho frequently are you going to use it, what kind of interface do you like, what is your budget, etc.

Q: CCleaner is always there for me. Why do I need something else?
A: Ok, but CCleaner is a PC/registry cleaner first of all, not an uninstaller. It is one of its secondary tools, so it might be better to use different apps for different tasks.

Q: How to use an uninstaller if I don’t know English and am not tech savvy?
A: Nothing to worry, because most programs have many interface languages to select from, and you have to click 2 or 3 buttons, basically to do the job.

Q: Can an uninstaller tool damage my PC?
A: There is a chance though very tiny. And even if anything happens, many uninstallers have a “restore” option.

Q: Installing a program to uninstall other programs…. Sounds irrational.
A: You may use a portable version instead, as an alternative.

Q: But I don’t install any programs, I only go online.
A: In that case, you really do not need an uninstaller software.

Q: Will there be ads in a free uninstaller?
A: Only if its a shady software from unverified vendor. Trusted and popular vendors don’t do that.
