Although the interface is simple and accessible, most likely you will not have any difficulties. Right away, it is possible to record video directly from the web camera, which is convenient if, say, you upload content to a blog regularly. Then edit video in the program, apply effects, background, sticks, captions, etc. As with any video editor, we can split, rotate, tilt, crop, adjust color etc., both to the entire video and fragments. Then, there is also a big choice of transitions, filters, stickers, titles, etc., as well as a set of tools to improve color, brightness, contrast. Most of it is automatic, just one click. There's Movavi Video Editor Plus that has been out recently in 2020 and it is a refreshed version of Video Editor with a more modern design, and in darker tones. 7-day trial with all features and tools is in place, though it puts a watermark and mutes half of file.

In our humble opinion, there are several programs worth having a go at. Here's why. Adobe Premiere Pro CC for Windows and macOS is already familiar to many users because of numerous other apps by Adobe: Photoshop, Reader, Illustrator, Fireworks, etc. Its ecosystem can easily spark creativity – via images, animations, sounds, effects. In terms of editing, there are all possible options. From trimming, applying effects, audio mixer to color, graphics, markers, metadata, transitions, libraries and so on.

VideoStudio by Corel has all the basics similar to other video editing applications, but is rather not so versatile as some others. 2 modes – storyboard and timeline, simple drag-and-drop into the timeline, similar to other apps, single video track. 720×480 is the default frame size that could be adjusted surely. Formerly Sony Vegas, now Magix, is a very popular video making application. It works on Windows and offers a 30-day trial, with 3-minute video length limit. In Store there’s a variety of transitions, title templates, free audio sounds (jet passing, applause, alarm, glass break, bicycle bell, etc.).

For simplicity try out OpenShot Video Editor. It is totally free with no hidden payments, and it works on Windows, Linux and MacOS. The program is stripped down to the very core features: import files, preview screen, timeline, effects and export. Here’s the basic sequence: import your images/clips/music, arrange it in the timeline, choose effect or transition in between, preview and export. For more programs and in-depth analysis, please head over to our 10 best video software article.

Casual vs Professional vs Online Services

Casual video editors. Mainly contain a set of tools for uncomplicated manipulations such as cropping, cutting, splitting, image resizing, etc. They are principally characterized by plain interface, low system requirements, basic visual effects library, transitions, subtitle templates. Some apps offer screen capture and voice recording as extra features.

Professional video editors. Pro editing software is required for big-scale video projects. It provides instruments for detailed processing, supports many plugins, and uses custom presets for any device, format, resolution and quality. Each video and/or audio element can be processed by filters, effects (internal and external). As a rule, such programs require a powerful computer.

Online services. Designed to get the job done quick and easy, these solutions provide standard editing instruments but each action should be applied one at a time. A bit impractical, yet using Canva as an example, we get a selection of templates, music, sounds, background presets and stickers. This type of work doesn't load the system but requires a stable Internet connection. Typically, free functionality is limited in file size.

Essential video editing software features are:

  1. Default tool kit - trim, crop, split, add text, effects, transitions.
  2. Hardware acceleration - CPU and GPU resources for faster processing.
  3. Common formats support - MP4, MOV, AVI, WMV, FLV, MKV, WEBM for video; MP3, MP4, WAV, WMA, AAC, FLAC, M4A for audio; JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIF, BMP - for images.
  4. Multiple tracks - simplifies editing workflow significantly.
  5. Audio waveform display - allows to view and edit audio components in detail.
  6. Rendering settings - resolution, frame rate, bitrate (quality), sample rate, channels change, etc.

Additionally, there might be voice recording, video/camera capture, DVD burning, cloud storage, sharing options, etc.

For our top-10 video editing software candidates we performed several tests on two computers with the following characteristics:

  1. Windows: Intel i3 CPU with 3.3 Ghz, 8 GB RAM, Windows 10
  2. Mac: Intel Core i5 CPU with 2.3 Ghz, 8 GB RAM, macOS 10.13.6

We used a short film Tears of Steel as the main sample for video editing. And the additional video track for the merge test we got this Earth clip from Pexels. Our tests were aimed at measuring speed of execution of popular editing tasks:

  1. Change the color balance (add black-and-white filter),
  2. Adding an additional element (text),
  3. Edit display (flip)
  4. Basic editing (merge 2 files).

Note that free or trial versions available in the public domain (as of December 2020) were used. In some programs the rendering speed was noticeably slower because their free version didn’t support hardware acceleration. Times in the table below are presented in minutes and seconds (mm:ss).
